The needles are much finer than those used for injections and often can hardly be felt. They are inserted into specific points and a sensation often described as a dull ache may be felt for a few moments. After this very little sensation from the needle is felt. Needles may be inserted for either a few seconds or left in place for up to 20 minutes.

Other traditional Chinese treatments may also be used such as moxibustion where smouldering herbs are are used to warm the acupuncture points and stimulate the bodies energy. Cupping may also be used which involves applying a light, comfortable suction over the acupuncture points using glass suction cups.
